Fashion Photograph review - Rankin

Following up with my recent post about gothic trends, I was particularly inspired by this photograph and the film... check it out :)

This is a photograph from another series of photographs that feature in a fashion film that is directed and produced by Rankin. These were also featured inside the first issue of his new magazine ‘Hunger’

I love the composition of this image, as the depth of field makes the model stand out against the background. I also love how the models face is in the top third of the frame. I think the eyes of the model’s makes a connection with the audiences, which attracts them to view the image in further detail.

The lighting that Rankin would have used for this shoot would mostly have been natural lighting as it the location appears to be a sunny/ overcast beach. I also would expect that he would use some sort of studio lighting, relying on the natural lighting mainly. I think this is a good source of inspiration for my project, as when shooting on location I will have to rely on natural lighting, especially when I am filming for my fashion film.

I think the general mood of this piece appears quite dark, I think this is down to the styling of this photograph, as the dark make up makes Erin O’Connor appear very mysterious and ominous. I think Rankin is trying to get Erin to show a whole different side to her normal persona of being very androgynous, as it shows Erin embodying her natural beauty which is why I think Rankin has chosen to shoot her on the beach.

The camera angle and shot that has been used is the same one as the photograph of Milla Jovovich, Rankin clearly wanted the viewer to focus on her upper body rather than her lower body.

The location and the themes of this photographs/ film link well together, as I love how the beach is contrasted against the new personality that Erin is taking on.

For my own project I will incorporate the lighting techniques that Rankin uses for this piece. I also love the idea of contrasting two things such as Erin’s personality with the beach. I could source out locations similar to this.
