With the up and coming release of Resident Evil 5 starring Milla, I wanted to contrast how the contrast between her rogue character and her sexy yet chic approach she has when it comes to fashion and fashion photography.
I bought the first issue of Hunger
magazine a while ago, and flipping through the pages I noticed this editorial
named ‘Killa Milla’ photographed by Rankin...
The reason why I love these photographs
from this editorial is down to the styling and composition. I particularly like
the composition of this piece as I think that the subject being central allows
the viewers eye to focus on the subjects face, which is the main focal point.
I love the tones and shadows in her face,
I love how half of her face is in shadow, but the other is blasted with light
whilst contrasting against her dark eye make up. I think that the bold tones of
the blacks and whites make this photograph extremely powerful and eye catching.
For my own project I will have to incorporate the technique that Rankin has
used to create powerful contrasting tones, as well as flawless beautiful make
up.
Rankin has photographed using a high key
lighting, however instead of using a pure white background he has used a grey
background. I think that this has worked out really well, as the contrast
between the background and the models skin, makes the subject really stand out.
Also it makes a great contrast with the models clothing. I really like the
clothing that he has chosen for Jovovich to wear as in addition to the clothing
contrasting with the background, it also contrasts with her pale skin. I think
this really stands out to the viewer.
Milla Jovovich appears very powerful in
this photograph, and I think that Rankin wanted to show her strength and
authority, especially in the acting and modeling world. I think that he wanted
to portray her as being very strong, is because I think it’s hard to be classed
as one of Hollywood’s most beautiful women. I also love how Milla appears very
androgynous; I adore how she can look so feminine whilst still having masculine
characteristics. I think Rankin has captured this well. For my own project I
would love to incorporate the whole androgynous aspect into my shoot, as I
think it makes the viewer look twice, especially at women who look like
handsome men, and men who look like beautiful women.
I love how Rankin has framed this shot,
as it brings the viewers attention in on the model, making sure that their
attention isn’t elsewhere on the model. I also love how he has decided to use a
medium shot, I think this also eliminates the viewer from focusing on something
else.
I don’t think that this piece has a
specific concept other than focusing on the beauty of powerful women.
The reason why I am inspired by this
piece is because I love the female being portrayed as a strong figure, rather
than being portrayed innocent. For my own project I plan to incorporate the
whole aspect of gender bending, and showing my models being strong human beings
by wearing risqué outfits and posing in strong and powerful stances.
