1940's vs. Urban Outfitters

A couple of days ago I found out my 1940′s styled photo shoot is in three weeks and of course you know what this meant- my brain went into panic mode. Yes I have been working super hard on creating a sketchbook full of inspiration for the shoot and have loads of ideas milling round in that empty space between my ears that some call a brain, however, having a date for the shoot has made things very real and I’ve been attempting to construct finalised ideas for all aspects of the shoot.
To give you some context, I am in a group of three for this photo shoot and we all have different eras from this century to style for.  However these aren’t just stand-alone photographs, they’re to put towards a ‘campaign’ for our chosen department store: Urban Outfitters. So in short, our task is to create a series of photographs between the three of us that appear cohesive and would be suitable for a campaign for urban outfitters. Not asking for a lot right?!
I’ve had so much fun generating ideas for this shoot, now everything just needs to be cemented and finalised in order for the shoot to go well! The other two gals in my group have fabulous ideas as well and i’m so excited to see how our campaign turns out. I will go into more detail about the concept for our campaign in another blog post- as it takes a lot of explaining.
So tonight I decided to focus on the make-up styling on my photograph. In my research, I have focused on 1940′s film noir, femme fetal and hollywood glamour- as for me this really sums up the USA in the 40′s and was a really beautiful era of the century. Now, I have had to come up with a way of combining the sexy, sultry glamour of the femme fetals in film noir with the funky, alternative and street style of the urban outfitters brand.
Here are a few images, mood boards and videos that have inspired my research. On tuesday, I’m attempting to recreate some looks on my gorgeous model (thank you Emma!!) so I’m hoping that they go well! Overall I think a bold lip in a dark red, plum or brown with heavy eye makeup is on the cards. I’m considering experimenting with glitter eyes for an even bolder aesthetic. Happy viewing!
